Nduduzo Makhathini x A Love Supreme

  • Public Records 233 Butler Street Brooklyn, NY, 11217 United States (map)

Take Two is an immersive deep-listening night consisting of two elements: an uninterrupted, high-quality playback of a seminal jazz album, followed by a modern-day reinterpretation by New York City’s finest musicians.

Our sixteenth edition will feature the iconic American jazz saxophonist John Coltrane and his 1965 magnum opus A Love Supreme. This album served as a spiritual declaration for Coltrane and a channel through which he could reach a higher power. Resultantly, it is one of the 20th century's most revered and deeply divine pieces of music.

The live reinterpretation will be led by South African pianist and Blue Note artist Nduduzo Makhathini. Makhathini cites A Love Supreme as a pivotal album in his musical development: “As someone who started playing jazz very late, I had always been looking for a kind of playing that could mirror or evoke the way my people danced, sung, and spoke. [A Love Supreme] provided that."
